Sunday, June 4, 2017, is National Cancer Survivors Day and we are celebrating those who have defeated cancer and supporting patients who are currently fighting the disease. Over the past decade, new treatment discoveries, prevention and early detection have aided in the decrease of mortality rates for patients diagnosed with cancer. In fact, according to the American Cancer Society Annual Report, cancer-related death rates have decreased for all major ethnic and racial groups and for the most common types of cancer, including lung, breast, colon and prostate cancer.
Other noteworthy cancer achievements worth celebrating include:
- Decreasing cancer mortality rates for 11 of the 16 most common cancers in men and 13 of the 18 most common cancers in women
- Decreasing rates of new cancer cases in men
- Decreasing overall cancer mortality rates from 2010 to 2014 – down 1.8% per year in men, 1.4% per year in women and 1.6% per year in children
