COURSE SYLLABUS

"Understanding the Immune System. How It Works" (pdf) is a great place to start your introduction to Immunology. This publication from the National Institutes of Health covers all the main topics including antibodies, T-cells, B-cells, IgG, IgE and natural versus acquired immunity - and of course, allergy. It will open in a new window, so be sure your pop-up blocker is turned off. A better way to view this is with our Issuu Reader. A new web feature, this page turning technology makes presentations & publications a pleasure to read on your monitor. Just click on the booklet below and enjoy!

ALL ABOUT DENDRITIC CELLS & DC THERAPY

One of the key types of cells active in the immune system is the dendritic cell and your second reading assignment Dendritic Cell Therapy (pdf) provides some excellent background on how these cells process and present antigen to the immune system. It is the method used by Geron with their LAMP-based vaccine, GRNVAC1, targeting cancer cells with their proprietary target, telomerase.

AIRBORNE ALLERGENS

Your next assignment, should you choose to accept it, is to learn a bit more about allergies by reading another excellent NIH publication, Airborne Allergens (pdf). Particular attention should be paid to the section on immunotherapy and allergy shots - there will be a quiz to follow!

*BONUS READING* THE JORDAN REPORT 2007

For a little extra credit, you can read The Jordan Report (pdf). This excellent study provides an in-depth analysis of the state of vaccine research. It is important reading and you will get extra credit!
